Take the cruise ferry to Sweden: the quickest way to travel slowly

If you’re travelling to Sweden from Belgium, the Netherlands or Germany, you can choose a route that turns the journey into a holiday straight away: the Color Line cruise ferry between Kiel and Oslo. You don’t arrive directly in Sweden, but from Oslo you drive through the stunning Norwegian countryside and over the mountains into Sweden.
The big advantage is that the ferry sails whilst you sleep.
You check in at Kiel in the afternoon, drive your car on board, have a bite to eat, enjoy the ship and wake up the next morning in Norway. After breakfast, you sail into Oslo.
Slow travel at its most efficient.
Well worth the trip just for the Oslofjord
Sailing into (or out of) the Oslofjord is truly magical. The view of the islands, the speedboats playing in the ferry’s wake, the charming houses on the tiny islets...
You can also rest your eyes on the sea whilst on the move: outside on the deck, sheltered from the wind, or inside at the stern with large windows and a view of the sea.
In the evening, the top deck café is highly recommended. With live music and a view of the sunset, the crossing feels more like a mini-cruise than a regular journey.

Great for families
There’s plenty for children to do: a cinema, swimming pool, games hall, performances and other activities. Most activities need to be booked separately, so it’s wise to check in advance. We didn’t do many activities ourselves, as after the journey to Kiel we mainly wanted to rest and sleep. There’s also a shopping street on board.
Eating and sleeping on board
You can book various meals. We opted for the lunch buffet, which offered a huge (you could say massive) selection. Handy, especially if you’re travelling with children. However, there are also plenty of small places where you can get pizza, sandwiches or other snacks.
For the cabin, we went for the cheapest option. A cabin with a view sounds nice, but ultimately you’re mainly there to sleep. So for us, a basic cabin was more than enough.
Book in good time
An important tip: book early. The price depends heavily on when you make your reservation. Those who book in good time usually pay a lot less; there are also occasional promotions as well.
