Our Tips for the Journey
We drove from Belgium to Lofsdalen through Denmark and southern Sweden, and along the way we discovered some great places to stop, stay and explore. Here are our tips for making the most of the journey.
We also made a short video if you prefer watching over reading.
From Belgium to Lübeck

Stay on Dutch roads for as long as possible. The road quality is excellent, and if you're driving an electric vehicle, the charging infrastructure is significantly better than in Germany.
Lübeck is a beautiful Hanseatic city with plenty of affordable hotels and charming streets to explore.
We chose to spend the evening in nearby Travemünde, enjoying pick-nic with a view over the Baltic Sea before continuing north the next morning.
Taking the Ferry to Denmark

The ferry crossing to Denmark is easy, affordable and surprisingly scenic. Ferries depart roughly every hour, and while reservations are possible, they're usually not necessary.
The crossing itself is short but beautiful, and costs around €100 including your car.
Through Denmark
Once you leave the ferry, you'll soon cross the impressive Great Belt Bridge, one of Denmark's most iconic engineering landmarks.
If you're planning to stay overnight and haven't booked accommodation in advance, consider driving a little further into Sweden. Hotels around Copenhagen can be expensive, while accommodation across the border is often much more affordable.
Exploring Southern Sweden

Southern Sweden offers excellent roads and beautiful scenery, making it well worth taking your time and adding a few stops along the way.
Malmö is an obvious choice, but we opted for the charming coastal town of Varberg, where we spent the night in a cozy B&B. Booking accommodation on the same day is usually no problem. Swedes are incredibly relaxed, and guesthouses are often both welcoming and reasonably priced.
A Stop in Gothenburg
We also spent some time in Gothenburg, arguably Sweden's most vibrant city.
With its large university population, leafy parks, trendy neighborhoods, excellent restaurants and independent shops, it combines Scandinavian charm with an almost Parisian atmosphere in the evening.
If you have the time, Gothenburg is absolutely worth a stop.
The Final Stretch to Lofsdalen

Southern Sweden gradually gives way to a more rugged landscape. Rolling hills, farmland and picturesque churches line the route, reminding us somewhat of the Burgundy region in France. There are hidden treasures everywhere.
As you continue north, the scenery changes. Fast-flowing rivers appear, forests become denser, and eventually you start spotting reindeer along the roadside. That's when you know you're getting close.
Soon enough, you'll reach Lofsdalen, where moose are often the first locals to welcome you.
Arriving Home

By the time you arrive, it will probably be late. Yet as soon as you step inside your warm mountain cabin, surrounded by nature and silence, you'll instantly feel at home.
